It doesn’t take too many house parties to realise that everybody is starved of a good playlist. With a choice of streaming services and their fancy algorithms surely we should all have the perfect soundtrack to hand. But in reality we end up listening to Spotify’s knocked together playlists, with vibe-killing names like ‘soul coffee’ or ‘walking like a badass’.
There are superior alternatives but finding them can be tricky. My go-to is a rather obscure one, as its name, Tonangeber, might suggest. The site streams the musical explorations of two Zurich based DJs. At times avant-garde, often moving and always surprising their playlists are uniquely soulful. Mixing rare tunes and stylish covers the sets always take you to unexpected places.
The website’s beautiful abstract imagery also adds to the experience, something I’ve written more about on Trendland.
